Reflection

Through a year of MA course, I researched a theme that centre on a multiple personality.
Also the relationship between shadow and object are delivered from my theme of multiple personality.
Mostly I had trouble to create a scenario that visualization of invisible mental identities connect with digital art.

I realized some points after finished to create final piece that is about acting.
Basically my work is obviously student work, so is not able to find sponsors. Therefore I could only use a woman in the street even if I wanted to use professional actress. Also I had to find a Japanese woman in this foreign country because as I wrote in first section that Japanese language has many proper nouns.

The biggest bottleneck to create my work that is necessary to act different identities by just one actor and wanted to represent the changes of identity to the other identity because the stem of my concept is multiple personality.
Eventually I had to use extreme changes of identities in the scenario. Therefore the final work would be seen that looks like a woman acting different parts rather than acting multiple personality patient.
However I reckon learned a lot of the importance of editing as many people said that editing likes cooking, more than before.
Shoot an amateur woman acts a difficult part follows by scenario, repetition watch these footages very carefully then choose only nice parts from these footages and cook. Then I reconfirmed that it would be not tasty if I eat each part of footages individually, but I notice that if I cook well then these materials are being a tasty food likes mix meet fried rice.
If I could use professional actress then the scenario and editing would have more great width and might be easier to proceed, but there is some advantages to use amateur woman to act difficult parts that is find the way of choosing materials to cook, necessity of decoration as editing.

During I was living in England, I always thinking about identity and that reflected to my works. Both BA and MA studies, I researched and considered about identity follows by multiple personality.
After I going back to Japan this summer, I am going to find a job in film industry. I reckon that I would have more opportunities and connection for creations in the future. Then I would like to create a film with professional actress with my scenario which concept of multiple personality again. Because the theme is so deep and I did not satisfied my works with this theme yet.

Project Proposal

This is my project proposal.Just ignore some shit English.. 

Aims

 

Every human beings are having own individual personalities. It’s the thing for represent own self and also it’s the key of understanding other people as well.

I defined that character which is able to create new though and emotions from own thinking and feeling, are personality.

Because every people have some different characters more or less. For example use different characters in the case which formal or informal situations. These characters are controlled by own self, so it cannot to say personalities.

However it called multiple personality when these characters are being out of control by self.

 

“Dissociative identity disorder (DID) as the existence, in an individual of two or more distinct identities or personalities, each have own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment. At least two of these personalities are considered to routinely take control of the individual’s behaviour, and there is also some associated memory loss, which is beyond normal forgetfulness. This memory loss is often referred to as “losing time”. These symptoms must occur independently of substance abuse, or a general medical condition.”

Objectives

 

Firstly it is necessary to know the medical meaning of personality differences. Because it is the key of representing conflict between each personalities which is going to be fused between personality and personality.

I am going to represent work by moving image because this medium has many advantages for represent as sound, colour and so on because it time based medium. And I think it is only way of represent visually abstracted likes put colours on the pallet.

Because as we could compare each characters by colours, personalities are created by different situations and these has own individual colours and shaves. This is the way of how represent the impotence of differences.

 

Visual fusion of personality and personality which impossible to represent in the real world. Because personalities are not visualised.

The word ‘room’ can be interpreted as the ‘object’ as well as the ‘space’

where human lives.

So if I say the ‘room’ is ‘body’, its mean I also could say the ‘room (body) where someone living’ equal ‘mind’

.

Because the ‘room’ equal the ‘space for human’

also said body as well.

So I could say Human (or may be animals) 　

equal someone in the space as well as mind.

 

I would build a story likes looked room story based on the idea. Because all character shares one room as an object, so it could represent conflicts of inside and also individual character has own opinions, it such make discussions and these will be cause of them fuse.

Therefore using computer technologies for distinguish character from the other.

And finally they are fusing into the others who visually totally different.

But this story needs to be careful for casting because it will be difficult to act because object (body) is same even personalities are different.

 

Here is a example of difficult situation that

“

DID patients are having many sorts of character which host personality, childish (child) personality, persecuted personality, custodian, and also the Devil personality. Japan and the other country, for example Europe countries are having specifically different cultures, climates, religions and histories.

From ages ago, if people had changed personality strangely who were called demonic possession and to having exorcism ceremonies in Europe countries. Also it cases called fox or cat possession and it was also having bogy ceremonies by medium masters.

Most DID personalities are having own name, or nicknames. But sometimes, patient has mysterious name that using for cat for example TAMA (Japanese traditional cat’s name). Those kind of personalities imitates gesture and normally able to speak and understand human languages. But rare case of patient who had cat personality cannot speak and understood human languages.”

If the cast cannot act each different character fluently, it will make big damage for final work, even if I could well represent my concept and idea through the story.

However it is really difficult to use professional skilled actress because of this is student work and as it has financial problem. So need to consider different pattern for representation.

 

I might be able to other idea that uses different casts for each individual character. Then composite faces to one face. But this would have more serious problem that need great 3D skills otherwise work would look cheap.

 

Maybe use some masked casts for acting each characters.

It might be one of good solution of cast because they are having each different personalities, atmosphere, and moving patterns, as they are different person.

This idea could keep following the concept and idea, also could keep visual impact.

 

 

Rationale

 

I originally came from Japan. Of course culture and language are completely different from western culture.  Also people’

s personalities are completely different as well.

For example, we can cross-own legs or even put legs on a chair during talking with older people because it’s not ruled rude. But if you did it in Japan, every older people will feel upset, because it’

s ruled very rude.

This kind of things makes me think about the differences of Eastern and western culture. This is the first stage of idea, which related to my concept and went farther to link with multiple personality that medically called Dissociative Identity Disorder.

I think everybody having different character for example differences between formal and informal aspects. So the differences between me and DID patients is just I am controlling myself.

So would discover more about the cases of relationships of characters in DID patient and why.

 

Reason of why less Japanese DID patients than American

 

“The number of DID patients by comparison between America and Japan, American DID patients are 100 times (of course calculated population differences) more than Japanese DID patients. A reason of why less Japanese patients is that Japanese society places adaptability emphasis rather than individualism in Japanese society. Because Japanese people use different nouns for calling own self-meaning as English ‘I’. For example, if a man call own self-front of close people as parents or friends use ‘Ore’, ‘Oira’. If other people were older or high position as senior, teacher or boss, just call ‘Watashi’, ‘Boku’ or ‘Jibun’. Also If talk with unknown people who related to business may use ‘Watakushi. It is not just only the word of how to call own self, when a man using right word of self who will change his language, appearance and also behaviors as well. So that mean it is unnecessary to divide personalities because Japanese people already use kind of different personalities in right place and time.”

During I researched about DID I knew that each personalities are sometimes unknown each other but also they are sometimes known each other by speaking, heard from other personality or homepage which have made by other personality who ever known each others. I felt its likes pour the different colours of drinks in just one glass in different times.

 

Visually I had influenced by cubism.

For example Pablo Picasso captured different surfaces of same face from different angles and painted on a canvas.

I had inspired this theory to create my work.

The thing is shooting object is just one but having many personalities. But need to be represented by same time. Its linking fluently to cubism theory visually. Also I reckon there are more possibilities for develop this idea.

 

Outcomes

 

I would exhibit my final work and also make copies of DVD.

In the final show I would project my work to the large screen.

Also I am going to place some sound system.

I would prefer to use individual space as a room if there is enough space to use by myself because of my story is related to a room and also its will avoid from other students work’

s sound. Because I had an accident that different sounds were crushed and it cause each works worse in my BA degree show.

 

Media

 

I am taking footages by DV handy camera.

Using software will be Final cut pro for editing and use After effects for manipulate images. Also use Logic pro for editing sounds.

 

 

Methodologies

 

Researching for built story, by recording any life happenings, researching by films, books and web site especially scenarios of looked room stories.

And also researching motion graphic art works and music PV and any other art works for investigate the technical possibilities of representation

Risk assessment

 

I will exhibit by using projector so need to be careful about code. Otherwise someone will cauch on codes and fell down.

Also need to be careful to setting up all the electronical equipments as computer, projector and sound system safety. Because these are all expencive stuffs so might be stolen.
